About Us

A Short History

Our journey began in 1935, with the creation of the Cheshire & Derbyshire subregion of the Youth Hostels Association (YHA). Two decades later, in 1955, several Local YHA Groups emerged—among them the Stockport YHA Local Group, the foundation of what we are today.

By 2007, all Local Groups were asked to drop “YHA” from their names. That’s when we proudly became the Stockport Walking and Outdoor Group—better known as SWOG—while continuing as an Affiliated Group of the YHA.

In February 2018, the YHA ended its affiliation program, but SWOG carried on with fresh energy, joining the Peak and Northern Footpath Society later that year.

Most recently, in September 2025, we marked a major milestone: our 70th anniversary since the formation of the Stockport Local Group in 1955. It was a celebration not just of years, but of countless walks, friendships, and adventures that have defined our community.
